Abstract
Purpose: Medical professionals frequently use probabilistic expression when they provide medical information for patients in clinical settings. Probabilistic expression includes qualitative expression which consists of words and quantitative expression which consists of numbers. Previous studies have reported that patients misunderstand terms because they recognize the probability of qualitative expression differently. Thus, the author has attempted to develop a countermeasure for the shortcomings by comparing recognized probability of qualitative expression between medical professionals and patients.

Methods: Ten qualitative probabilistic expressions most commonly used were selected. They were included in a 20-item questionnaire which explained the diagnostic possibility of bronchitis and lung cancer. This questionnaire was sent to medical professionals and patients, and its probability values were investigated on a visual analogue scale.

Results: Most expressions had ¡Ã50% range between maximum and minimum values. Patients recognized high probability items at a much higher probability than medical professionals, whereas they recognized low probability items at a much lower probability than medical professionals. However, in the context of lung cancer, both recognized high probability items at a much higher probability, whereas both recognized low probability items at a much lower probability.

Conclusion: In conclusion, in order to increase the accuracy of communication and to eliminate the potential for misunderstanding the author would like to suggest combined usage of qualitative probabilistic expressions with its categorized probability.
